In 2012, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists encourages women to educate themselves about their midlife health issues and to talk with their Ob-Gyn about their concerns. Educate themselves about menopause, hormone replacement therapy, hysterectomy, and whether or not to keep their ovaries? In the USA, for women over 45 years old, 40% have had a hysterectomy, and about half have had normal ovaries removed. Second opinions show that 90% of hysterectomies are unnecessary. Post-menopausal women are supposed to tell their doctors that they don't want to have sex any more because it feels like a stabbing knife? Studies show that women don't like asking their doctors about sex, and doctors don't like asking woman about sex either. I'm a Stanford-trained doctor, and you bet I educated myself. And now I'm passing it on to you. Because no one showed me how to put in a tampon, no one explained how sexually-transmitted diseases are passed on from one person to another, and just like you, I wanted my daughter to grow up with better information than I did.
