Mehr als einhundert Bischofssitze sind in Agypten gegen Ende der Spatantike historisch bezeugt. Doch welche Bauformen wahlte man fur die bischoflichen Kirchen und welchen Ort nehmen sie innerhalb der Stadttopographie ein? Mit welchem Aufwand wurden die Episkopien gestaltet? Lassen sich karitative Einrichtungen der Bischofe baulich nachweisen? In diesem Band werden diejenigen zwolf Statten Agyptens vorgestellt, an denen sich materielle Zeugnisse der bischoflichen Prasenz nachweisen lassen oder hypothetisch mit ihr verbunden wurden. Die Belege erstrecken sich vom Patriarchensitz Alexandreia bis zur Nilinsel Philai in der Thebais II. Einleitende Beitrage analysieren die spatantiken agyptischen Bischofslisten und die archaologischen Befunde. Ferner sind dem ausfuhrlichen Katalog Plane und Abbildungen beigegeben.

"Contributor Biography - German Hans Reinhard Seeliger ist Inhaber des Lehrstuhls fur Alte Kirchengeschichte, Patrologie und Christliche Archaologie an der Katholisch-Theologischen Fakultat der Eberhard-Karls-Universitat Tubingen. Er hat zahlreiche kirchenhistorische und ikonographische Publikationen vorgelegt und war uber viele Jahre im Bereich der Erforschung der Malerei und Geschichte der romischen Katakomben tatig. Kirsten Krumeich hat mit der Arbeit ""Spatantike Bauskulptur aus Oxyrhynchos"" (Reichert-Verlag 2003) promoviert, fur die sie mit dem ""Juliana-Anicia-Preis"" ausgezeichnet wurde. Sie war von 2001 bis 2006 Mitarbeiterin am Forschungsprojekt ""Archaologie der antiken Bischofssitze"" (ARABS) an der Universitat Tubingen und ist Assistentin am Seminar fur Orientalische Archaologie und Kunstgeschichte der Martin-Luther-Universitat Halle."
