Approaching Difference Differently: Practices for transforming leadership conversations

Overview

This book invites us to rethink the way we approach difference in our leadership conversations - and within ourselves. Human beings evolved to experience difference as something that might signal danger. And, although we can reframe this intellectually, the physiological process that puts us 'on alert' remains much as it was for our earliest ancestors. Therefore, to truly engage with difference in new ways, we work with our body as well as our mind. In Approaching Difference Differently, you'll discover: ideas from the field of dialogue that allow you to describe the shape and quality of your conversations and understand why they unfold as they do; embodied practices that change how you relate to difference and support you to recover presence when caught in the energies of difference; and guidance on changing your practice in your leadership conversations and fostering conditions in which difference can be explored. Together, the ideas and practices in these pages give rise to conversations that are rich, insightful and more human, and each one makes the world a slightly better place. Are you ready to approach difference differently?

Reviews

Calmly and clearly, this book invites us to engage in the difficult quest of trying to stay in relationship whilst engaging with our differences. This is surely the topic of the moment, relevant not only to business leaders, coaches and supervisors, but also to our fractured global society. Edna Murdoch, Director, Coaching Supervision Academy This book is a wise and generous gift - read it, do the practices. You'll be a better leader. You'll be a better human. You can thank Amanda later. Tiphani Palmer, Leadership Embodiment - Legacy Lineage Holder Approaching Difference Differently is an ideal read for leaders, facilitators, coaches and those working in areas which are dominated by challenging topics - in present circumstances, that could be anyone. Jane Ball, Academy of Professional Dialogue & Dialogue Associates 'This conversation is feeling a bit stuck and I don't know how to move it on'. If this statement resonates, then Approaching Difference Differently is the book for you. Scott Heald, Director, Public Health Scotland Practical, thoughtful, and deeply human - a book that transforms how we approach difference. Timothy B. Kelly, Professor of Social Work (Emeritus) Approaching Difference Differently is both timely and timeless. At a moment when polarised exchanges so often dominate, Amanda Ridings offers a fresh way of meeting one another - one that feels deeply relevant now, yet rooted in wisdom that endures. Dr Eunice Aquilina, author of Embodying Authenticity and Stepping Into Your Power If more of us understood the difference between debate and dialogue, the world would be a better place. Amanda Ridings distils decades of experience into this rich, clear, and inviting book. Anouk Brack, Lead Trainer, Leadership Embodiment Europe
