People who go up in balloons say that this appearance is so marked that the land or sea beneath them looks like a saucer, the middle being visible far below them, while the edges look as high as themselves. When we see the whole horizon we see a circle or hoop about us, but it is a circle or hoop seen from the centre, of which only a small part is seen or considered at once, and way part of it looks like a straight line.
