OverviewAs a boy, I watched the evening news and witnessed the reports of the Tet Offensive and every other major combat operation. Even then, I realized that America should have walked away when it was obvious that no real peace progress could ever be achieved. Later, when Ohio National Guard soldiers killed innocent Kent State protestors, I was filled with rage and disgust at the military. In 1969, I was a freshman and desperately wanted to become part of the peace movement. Songs like 'Revolution' and 'Here Comes the Sun' were my favorites. In 1972, I turned eighteen and was required to register for the draft. I experienced an epiphany and decided that I wanted to become a world traveler and chronicle my experiences as a journalist. The only logical choice was to enlist in the US Navy as a journalist. If you're looking for a story about some guy who was the last American out of Saigon or who killed six insurgents trying to set up an IED in Mosul, Any Road is not the book you want. If you want to read about an ordinary mana as much as any man can be called 'ordinary'a trying to deal with PTSD, trying to reconcile his beliefs, and trying to serve his country as best he can under extraordinary circumstances, you will love this story. Michael Gholston's life illustrates just how uncommon the 'common soldier's' life can be.
