Overview

Inspired by an award-winning web series, 'Antichrist' is the fourth and final novella in a four-part historical murder mystery that follows a mythic Italian serial killer, Il Sonnambulo, from Venice in the Spring of 1888 to the streets of London during the fateful Autumn of the Ripper Murders. Although fictional, the two central novellas in 'The Crimes of Il Sonnambulo' series, 'Ripper' and 'Demon', raise new questions and possible solutions to those dreadful events in Whitechapel. The series ends with 'Antichrist', set in fin de sicle Paris, five years after the Ripper's murderous rampage. 'The Crimes of Il Sonnambulo' tetralogy concludes with an intriguing suggestion as to who Jack the Ripper was, and what became of him.

The fourth in a very compelling, suspenseful series following a young artist who is drawn into a complex and horrifying web created by none other than Jack the Ripper! Previously seen lurking in the canals of Venice in Book 1, young Vittorio has pursued the man at first believed to be the infamous Il Sonnambulo to London (Books 2 and 3) where a series of copycats murders perpetrated by the equally infamous Jack the Ripper have brought loose ends together, pulling Vittorio into a cat and mouse game, making him an unwilling eyewitness. Now, in Antichrist, Book 4, the rain soaked, Belle Epoch streets of Paris set the scene for the final showdown. Vittorio has always known his prey to be the same man regardless of name and locale and now, with his own future in doubt and his present a mournful debacle of shame, an enterprising group has tracked him down for his expertise. It would seem they've drawn the same conclusions as Vittorio, but they have a plan; a plan to rid the world of this diabolical murderer while also furthering their own political agenda. It would also seem they have enlisted the help of Commisario Voza, Vittorio's friend and confidant from Venice, now trotting the globe to help bring the killer to justice. While the first 3 books were all equally sound in their illustrative descriptions of place and time, author Innocenti has brought the streets of Paris in the late nineteenth century to vivid life. Readers with any knowledge of the City of Light will immediately desire a return trip for an aperitif or a walk along the Seine, through the Luxembourg Garden or the streets on Montparnasse. A less familiar reader will find themselves enthralled and ready to get a stamp or two in their unused passports. The prose is sharp, exceptionally witty and of the four books in this entertaining series, Antichrist is arguably the most plot-driven of them; a rousing adventure and great closing chapter to the curious case of Vitorrio and Il Sonnambulo. A great summer read and highly recommended.
