OverviewAbstract: In this South Pole cli-fi adventure, a curious penguin embarks on an unprecedented trek to the other side of the colony's rookery. He intends to discover the reason for mysterious crunching noises and ensuing tremors that might ultimately destroy the foundation, and, therefore, forcing thousands of penguins to relocate elsewhere (read, catastrophic ). Soon after arriving, Auroral, the principle of this narrative, discovers the catalyst--a fast-moving glacier. Given his investigation, he also gets marooned in one of the fissures. Eventually, he's rescued by this mating season's partner, Corvus, and their equally venturesome offspring, Cetus. Some two weeks later, the trio returns. By then, all the adults and fledglings have departed for the austral summer feeding season (December). Equally unprecedented, no fledgling stays with its parents beyond the four-month phase of its rearing. The crux of this fable written for young adults and adults is not only a plausible scenario for a colony of emperor penguins but also a parable and prophesy given what's happening to Antarctica's vanishing ice shelves. Thus, a canary in the coal mine global warming outcome that jeopardizes all Antartica terrestrial species. Fortunately, there's a surprise and positive ending to this winsome anecdote, with factual scientific circumstances. As a retired educator and instructor for the likes of the Grand Canyon Field Institute, most of what I did for a living for some forty years entailed teaching various geosciences, natural and human history, environmental sciences, zoology, mathematics, and assorted published writings. Composing this novel based on a climatic crisis will help bring awareness to the reality of what's happening at both polar caps.
