Overview

Two young boys/men from disparate cultural and socioeconomic strata endure the pangs of bigotry. They are deemed expendable, each victimized by zeitgeist fomented by xenophobia. Despite taunts and ridicule, they survive the narrow-mindedness. The protagonist is unwittingly entangled in an anti-government militia that threatens his and his family's safety. He is also cajoled into joining a controversial research project. The other boy/man faces imminent death. They never meet but are linked by an ethereal symbiosis. Bert and Tanako were often within shouting distance, once at Hiroshima, Japan, on the other side of the world. Tony Kubek played with the New York Yankees for just over eight years. The teams won seven American League titles and three world championships. After retiring as a player, he worked 24 years for NBC TV. Along with it, he spent 13 seasons telecasting Toronto Blue Jays games. He retired from broadcasting after working five years for the Madison Square Garden TV Network doing Yankee games. Tony collaborated with Terry Pluto on the book 61 chronicling the Yankees' 1961 season. The novel is not about baseball though epigraphs are occasionally used chronicling historical events.
