OverviewWe started learning french the fall of 1975 with a wonderful retired french professor who was from France. She began our introduction into the french culture with the old fashioned dictation she gave us during every lesson. She explained, as well, some of the french language usages which were not easily translatable from English to French. We traveled to France in 1976. Armed with our beginning level of the language, we jumped into a very welcoming time that first year. Over the years we continued to come back to France, making wonderful friends and acquaintances. Eventually, we began spending longer periods of time in Paris. There we learned to talk with shopkeepers, conversed deeply with new friends, and discovered the world of french life. We walked the streets of Paris, took coffee in the cafes, and ate our baguette sandwiches in the many parks. It was during these long stays in Paris that I began to notice the importance of the park bench to the Parisian life. I became quite entranced with how deeply Parisian life manifested itself on these benches. Thus it came to me how those very mundane benches are truly monuments, unmarked though they may be by any plaque or guide book. --Sue.
