An Old Codger Goes Cruising: Memories of My Years Messing About in Boats

Overview

I consider myself extremely blessed with my many years of messing about in boats. If y'all will bear with me, I'd like to share some of my memories of those years. These stories include my earliest adventures, as well as some from later years. Also included are memories of some of my MOST exciting times I experienced in my late teens and early twenties racing outboard power boats. So, hang on tight-here we GO! I think that I'd better explain the ""messing about in boats"" reference. That phrase is shortened from a story from The Wind in the Willows, which was a classic children's novel by the British novelist Kenneth Grahame. It was first published in 1908. It details the story of Mole, Ratty, Badger, and Mr. Toad. In the story, Water Rat said to the Mole: ""Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing-absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."" PART ONE tells of my early years messing about in boats and a collection of stories coming about over my lifetime. Part of those years were dominated by racing outboard boats. I've also included a couple of stories from my years working in the yachting industry. PART TWO is about my most recent cruising boat, named Old Codger, and the cruises we have taken together. Old codger has developed quite a personality, as you will see.

Author Information

Chick (Charles) grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida in the 1950s-60s; but over the years has lived in north Florida, the coast of North Carolina, and the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Over the years, his experiences have led to him writing short stories about them. Some of his stories are true while others are inspired by real-life experiences. He is now retired and living in Henderson County, North Carolina. His main interest, other than writing short stories is messing about in boats. He lives with his wife, Debbie, a dog, three cats, and a bunch of turtles. He is the author of two previous books containing short stories, 'The Adventures of Apple John: the Man - the Myth.' And 'Chick Tales, the Truth, the Half Truth, and Nothing Like the Truth.' ANDY SILVERS (Harvey Alter) is an author, filmmaker, and YouTuber who was born in Luga, Russia. His parents adopted him at the age of three and brought him to America where he required many surgeries to fix orthopedic issues including scoliosis, hip misalignment, and more. The Silvers also adopted four more kids from Russia in the early 2000s. After transferring credits from community college, he graduated Suma Cum Laude from Liberty University's Zaki Gordon Center. In 2021, he released an original short film entitled ""Snapshot"" that tackles oft-ignored themes of adoption and disability. This film won a newly-invented award in the Mozi Motion Int. Film Festival called ""Accessibility."" In 2020, Andy began writing novels and other books starting with Red Sprites and Blue Jets, a coming-of-age story for ages 8-12. Following this was a children's picture book called The Very Colorful Caterpillar inspired by the Eric Carle book. While wrapping up film school, he devised his first novella called Solomon Grando vs the Jupiter Witch; this book follows a vampire who must save the world during an epidemic outbreak while battling his greatest fear-witches. Hoop Drama represents his biggest undertaking being his first adult novel.
