Excerpt from An Essay Toward a History of Shakespeare in Denmark That there are gaps and errors, I am well aware. It could hardly be otherwise in a field so little explored. I venture to point out also that the monograph has been written thousands of miles from the sources at a time when the lines of communication have been worse than uncertain. It has been impossible, therefore, to verify many statements, or to subject others to a new scrutiny.
