Overview

Louche women, dark streets, Europe and semi-sophisticated thugs playing the spy game; William Goldie's Among Other Things, They Call Me Thornton has all the ingredients of a spy thriller slightly shaken, but not stirred. Thornton has retired from the 'Department', but his reasons for doing so arouse suspicion in the Head of Internal Security, Raymond Haslam. So Thornton, the man who suffers 'red in the bed' syndrome and sees a 'mole' around every corner is himself placed under surveillance. And this is the start of Thornton working his way through the maze of suspicion and counter-suspicion that reaches into the gloomy and threatening corners of eastern Europe and the Middle East. He may be able to handle louche women, but when a woman has been to Oxford and has a chip on her shoulder - that's a different challenge altogether.
