OverviewIn Capitus Alejandra Figueroa takes us on a journey across the ages and traces many histories of civilization through the physiognomy of faces on statuary and in paintings. Combining over 330 black and white photographs of heads carved from stone, wood and metal and painted on canvas, this gallery of portraits suggests certain universal truths about human emotions such as joy and fear. Figueroas inimitable style beautifully renders the most evocative detail out of smooth marble and rough wood. The Mexican-born photographer Alejandra Figueroa lives in Paris. Since her first major show in 1997 at the Louvre, her work has been exhibited extensively, including at the Musee dOrsay and the Vatican museum. Her work is represented in numerous private collections and public institutions such as the Louvre, the Fonds National dArt Contemporain, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie. Steidl published her book Corpus.
