OverviewAgricultural reform in a number of countries has led to reduced support for many farm products. Support is likely to dwindle further as the Uruguay round is implemented. There are fears that farmers affected by these reforms may abandon their traditional crops in favour of other crops less subsidized, and therefore, less affected by reform. A possible option is a switch to fruit and vegetables, which could adversely affect producers in these sectors. This report examines three examples of diversification in the Netherlands, Japan, and the United States, and analyzes the ensuing policy problems.
