Excerpt from Agricultural Depression Causes and Remedies: Report Submitted to the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, February 15, 1894 And in using the word present it would be manifestly not satis factory to limit it to this year, or last or next year, or to any one year. If we compare the condition of agriculture in the year 1893 -with its condition in the year 1892 we may find a change for the better; if we make the comparison with the year 1890 we may find little difference. The fact that farming is not profitable this year is not evidence that it was not profitable last year nor that it will be either better or worse next year. Poor returns for a single year argue nothing except as to that particular year. Comparisons of any one year with any other year do not show reliable data for periods of time longer than one year, or two years, at most. If we compare the condition of agriculture in the years 1893, 1892, and 1891 with the conditions existing during the three years immediately preceding, we may discover favorable changes, while if we set general conditions of the farming industry during the last ten years against conditions during the next preceding ten years the con trast may be marked against the later period. So, in contrasting long periods we may find a general level about the same, and again differ ences worthy of note may be plainly apparent.
