Adventures of Pen and Lens

Overview

The Adventures of Lens and Pen is the third volume of Reza Allamehzadeh's memoirs. Although the title of his first book does not explicitly suggest a memoir, a large part of that work is in fact drawn from his personal observations and experiences in the Syndicate of Iranian Cinema Artists and Employees and the Association of Progressive Filmmakers during the early years after the establishment of the Islamic Republic. That book, titled The Mirage of Islamic Cinema in Iran, was published in 1991 by Navid Publishing in Germany. His second memoir, A Hand in Art, an Eye on Politics, is a direct account of his years in prison; it was released in 2012 by Ketab Corporation in Los Angeles. Now comes his third volume of memoirs, The Adventures of Lens and Pen-a collection of recollections from nearly six decades of Allamehzadeh's continuous work with the camera and the written word. Reza Allamehzadeh (born 1943) is an Iranian filmmaker, writer, and journalist whose career spans more than six decades across cinema, literature, and cultural activism. A former member of the Iranian Film Artists' Syndicate and the Progressive Filmmakers Association, he played an active role in the cultural landscape of Iran before leaving the country and continuing his work in Europe. Allamehzadeh's body of work includes documentaries, feature films, novels, short stories, and three volumes of memoirs. His writing and filmmaking often blend personal experience with creative imagination, addressing themes of social justice, freedom of expression, and the lived reality of exile. His voice remains a distinctive and influential presence in the world of Iranian diasporic arts and letters. Reza Allamehzadeh (رضا علامه]زاده) is an Iranian-born Dutch filmmaker, writer, and film critic known for his politically engaged documentaries and films focusing on exile, migration, human rights, and state repression. Born in 1943 in Sari, Iran, he studied film directing at the Tehran Academy of Film and Television before beginning his career in Iranian cinema. After political persecution and imprisonment in the years surrounding the 1979 Revolution, he left Iran and settled in the Netherlands in the early 1980s. His most notable works include The Guests of Hotel Astoria (1988), which portrays the lives of Iranian refugees, Holy Crime (1994), documenting the assassination of Iranian dissidents in Europe, and Iranian Taboo (2011), which examines the persecution of the Bahá'í community in Iran. In addition to filmmaking, Allamehzadeh has published fiction and children's literature and has taught film and media studies in Europe and North America, making him a significant figure in Iranian diasporic and political cinema.
