Overview

Mechanical valves, and in particular, bileaflet mechanical valves, have made considerable strides in durability and haemodynamic performance. However, biocompatibility in terms of thromboembolism, thrombosis and haemolysis has remained an area where improvement is needed. This discussion seeks to advance these areas of prosthetic valve function and provide clinical experience with an open pivot, bileaflet mechanical valve.
