Overview

The field of endocrine research is at the forefront of scientific research. In the field of diabetes, Nobel prizes have been given to researchers who discovered insulin, identified the protein and invented radioimmunoassays using insulin as a paradigm. This focus and interest are reflected in the rapid advances made in the study of endocrinology over the past two decades. These advances have necessitated the adaptation of modern molecular and cellular biology techniques therefore keeping researchers in this field at the cutting edge of their work. Thus, endocrine-related genes have been characterized and mutations in these genes have helped explain common and less common endocrine disorders. This text was conceived on the basis of the relationship between molecular techniques and gene expression. It is concerned with aspects of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis including molecular aspects of insulin, insulin-like growth factors, GnRH and GH gene regulation and glucagon. Also included are reviews on the recently cloned calcium receptor and steroid interactions with DNA.
