Reviews

This mystery featuring main character Dr. Josephine Reva is captivating enough, but knowing it is based on the real life of the author's grandmother, the first female doctor in parts of Brooklyn, NY, the story is even more delightful. It's the Roaring 20s. The world is changing rapidly, and with those changes come disputes over everything from alcohol use to public health to a woman's place in society. Enter Dr. Reva, a determined young woman who rose from a Little Italy orphanage under the tutelage of Mother Cabrini to become a medical doctor. She stands up for what she thinks, she is vocal in expressing her belief that the medical profession needs more female doctors, she's whip-smart, and she's an all-around spitfire. I liked her from the first page. - Amy M. Reade, author of A Traitor Among Us Pick your poison! Aconite launches the adorable Dr. Josephine series set in Brooklyn during the roaring 1920's. This trailblazing lady doc has her work cut out for her, even before she takes on the medical establishment and becomes a murder suspect. L.M.Jorden (who modeled Dr. Joe on her grandmother) has written a well-researched herstorical mystery set in New York during prohibition that captures the moment Allopathy (think big pharma) diverged from Homeopathy. It's an excellent romp with an entertaining cast of characters. The reader will be grateful that the talented doctor could take time out from her private practice to moonlight as detective. - reviewer ACONITE is dynamite! and Commedia dell'arte... witty dialogue in this satirical romp through early New York City history. -Advanced copy reviews This well crafted mystery allows the reader to appreciate anew the challenges of living during the 1920's, as Dr. Reva sidesteps the police to solve the mystery, putting herself in danger, yet not willing to let a murderer go free. The ending is every bit as satisfying as the journey we take into Dr. Reva's life, and this first book promises a rich series ahead! - Beth Camp, author of The Seventh Tapestry

Jorden is an exciting and engaging story with a well-developed plot and characters. Jorden has put in an extensive amount of medical and historical research and the book refers to medical terms, conditions, and treatments that were accurate for the time and era in which the story takes place. Although the plot is a historical mystery, the main character is a real person, and Jorden brings her struggles and accomplishments to life through this exciting story. - Reader's Favorite ACONITE is dynamite! and Commedia dell'arte... witty dialogue in this satirical romp through early New York City history. -Advanced copy reviews This well crafted mystery allows the reader to appreciate anew the challenges of living during the 1920's, as Dr. Reva sidesteps the police to solve the mystery, putting herself in danger, yet not willing to let a murderer go free.
