Der vierte Band der Gesammelten Schriften dokumentiert die frühen Versuche Warburgs seinen Bildbegriff auf eine systematische Grundlage zu stellen. Die vorgestellten Texte sind ein Schlüsseldokument der frühen Phase von Warburgs Denken und Forschen zur Geschichte und Theorie von Bild und Symbol zwischen ca. 1888 und 1905. Warburg schuf mit diesen, Fragment gebliebenen Texten eine dichte und betont biographische Dokumentation des eigenen Denkwegs, die auf einzigartige Weise einen Einblick in die Arbeitspraxis des jungen Gelehrten erlaubt. Erstmals unternimmt es diese Edition die provisorischen, unabgeschlossenen Aphorismen und Notizen Warburgs, sowie seine zahlreichen Schemazeichnungen und Diagramme in den Fokus zu stellen.
