Author Information

Duane Michals (b. 1932) is an American photographic artist noted for his sequential images, which often deal with myths and mysteries and for his creative extension of the possibilities of the photographic medium. Interested in art from a young age, Michals took classes at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, Pa., before attending the University of Denver, Colorado, from which he received a BA. His photographic career commenced as a freelance photographer for Vogue, Esquire, Mademoiselle, and Life magazines, doing fashion photography and portraits. Inspired by the work of such painters as RenU Magritte, Giorgio de Chirico, and Balthus-all of whom he has met, photographed, and collected-Michals began to address literary and philosophical ideas about death, gender, and sexuality. He worked with multiple exposures, sequences, and series, and combined text and drawings with his images. These innovations won both derision and acclaim, including a solo exhibition at MoMA in 1970. Consistent worldwide publication of his photographs in books and journals followed. In the major histories of photography, Michals is credited for broadening our understanding of the philosophical dimensions of photography from the 1960s to today.
