Overview

"""A Wallowa Gal"" paints word pictures upon the canvas of Wallowa County, noted as one of Oregon's 7 Wonders. From 2015-2019 Katherine Stickroth's ""Wallowa Gal"" columns in the local newspaper entertained readers with her fun and foibles as she adjusted from being a Mississippi city girl to an outdoorswoman. She included the special people of ""The County,"" those who befriended and guided her as she explored the depths of the Hells Canyon area, the open grass-scape of Zumwalt Prairie, and the heights of the Wallowa Mountains. Her adventures provided times for reflection on family, grandmothering, pets, widowhood, and community. From the vista point of one woman's heart, ""A Wallowa Gal"" offers a glimpse into Wallowa County, its unique people and its treasured culture."

Reviews

Katherine intertwines recollections of her previous life while vividly sharing her thoughts, impressions, and observations of Wallowa County living. Her writings remind us of our own daily experiences in the County that we often take for granted. Readers, enjoy the journey! Charleen Haines- a 53 year resident of Wallowa County. A Wallowa Gal is an interesting look at a woman's reinvention of herself at midlife. As she moves to a new and very different life in a remote area of Oregon, Katherine turns her keenly observant eye inward. At times amusing but also insightful, this collection of her columns makes for a great read. Mary Swanson, owner, The Bookloft in Enterprise, Oregon. When her husband passed, she gave herself permission to be what has always been in her heart- she is a writer. She made a brave decision, in memory of her husband, to move to Wallowa County. In this corner of Oregon, she found people who became her friends, found writing friends and found herself as if reborn. Debbie Lind, Retired Wallowa Public Library Director.
