"(7 years ago) My father shouted out, ""Mazarine, run!"" as he hauled me around. With me dragging after him, he bolted toward the finish line. As I made my way through the forest, branches and thorns sliced my legs open, causing blood to fall into the Forest floor that was blanketed in snow. Running miles through the shadowy Forest sapped most of my energy. The full moon was the sole source of illumination. My skeleton was attempting to rearrange itself into a shape I hadn't yet figured out, and I could feel it. Off the wooded trail, my dad dragged me into a little cave. ""Stay here, Mazarine."" ""Where's mom?"" I whispered as tears ran openly down my face. ""I don't know, sweetie. We can't go back for her, though."" I was ready to object before he silenced me. ""We have to stay quiet. There are people after you,"" he whispered, tears coming up in his eyes. ""Daddy, what's happening?"" He stared at me as tears began to fall from his face. ""You're not supposed to be alive, sweetie. You're a tribrid. Your kind shouldn't exist."" He caressed my hair, pulling me to his chest. ""I'm sorry for everything. Me and your mother have tried everything to protect you."" He drew me back so that he could look me in the eyes. ""You can't trust anybody, Mazarine. Not ever. you can only rely on yourself. Do you understand?"" I moaned, a sob escaping. ""Damn it, Mazarine! Do you understand? You have to be strong. Not for me, but for yourself. Promise me that you will never fully trust anyone. you can only rely on yourself. Can you do that?"" I nodded my head. ""Yes, daddy. I won't trust anyone. I'm the one in charge."" ""Do you trust me, Mazarine?"" He stared at me with so much sadness in his eyes. ""Yes,"" I answered without hesitation. My dad has always protected me. He has always been there for me while we migrated from place to place, as I would never completely fit in with one species. You can be a real tribrid through a sacrifice."" My dad said as he introduced a knife with a witch, werewolf, and vampire engraved onto the blade It was all of the species that made up me, a tribrid. ""What are you saying?"" I gazed at him, understanding what he was saying. ""Sweetie, it's the only way to guarantee you a life of freedom and peace. I would die if anything happened to you. Or, more likely, when. You're living on a timestamp, Mazarine. You're not strong enough. You aren't fully one species."" He took my hand, plunging the knife into my palm. ""You can't shift into a wolf; you don't have any vampire qualities besides the urge for human blood, and you can't cast any spells past the first level. Many might count on you being human if it wasn't for the affirmation at birth."" ""Then why can't we just run away together?"" I asked, trying to put the knife back in his hands. He gave me a sad, pitying look. ""Because they found out, sweetie."" I sucked in a sharp breath. They knew. How? If someone wasn't there when I was born, then it was nearly impossible for anyone else to know. ""I don't want to lose you too, Dad."" I continued sobbing.
