Overview

NTRODUCTION --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Man is a social being, by nature and necessity. Human beings tend to live in groups. This is testified by the history of human civilization. The transition from individual and isolated living of the primitive society to group and societal living was natural. But unlike animals and birds that have the gregarious instinct on account of which they tend to live together, social living of 'man' is qualified by conscious participation of individuals to form a society. The relationship between individual and society is too intimate to need any explanation. Without individual, the society remains an abstraction and without society the individual existence, growth and expansion remain an impossibility. It is said that man is biologically and psychologically attuned to live in groups, called 'society'. In a sense, society is a precondition for the growth and evolution of human nature. The influence of society on man can hardly be over emphasised. On account of tradition and cultural constructs, individual is constrained by the sense of discipline to cultivate the ethos of societal living. In the state of nature, every man tends to seek selfish aims but the social living imposes certain norms and disciplines on the individuals, on account of which they grow into responsible and empathetic individuals, caring for one another and sharing with each other. There is a sense in which the society limits human freedom and also liberates the individuals from different kinds of bondage. Each individual is unique in.
