OverviewJohn Brown was an abolitionist who fought against pro-slavery forces in Kansas, and later lead an attack on Harpers Ferry in an attempt to inspire a slave revolt. He was later executed by the federal government. This event was one of the causes of the Civil War. Thoreau gives a passionate defence of John Brown, contrasting his action with the passivity of many who were against slavery but did nothing to stop it.
