Foi por volta de 1655 que Bunyan descobriu ser um talentoso pregador, tendo sua fama reconhecida além das fronteiras do condado onde vivia. Cinco anos depois, em razão da intolerância religiosa na Inglaterra, foi preso por pregar sem autorização.
