Author Information

Scott Smith is an independent candidate in the 2016 Presidential race, with a background in Wall Street finance. Smith is a serial entrepreneur, having founded companies in such diverse industries as agriculture, finance, housing, education, media, and technology. He began his career as a pioneer grower of Sunburst tangerines. In the 1990s Smith was an early pioneer in structured finance, developing the model for conduit financing that allowed commercial real estate mortgages to be originated and securitized independent of third-party credit enhancement for the first time. On the strength of his new idea, his firm secured a one billion dollar line of credit from the investment bank Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette in 1993. This model was rapidly adopted by Wall Street and used for securitizing many forms of debt. Later that decade, he formed a firm to structure the financing for the initial phase of President Nelson Mandela's Redevelopment Program, which helped provide affordable housing for some 11,000 families near Soweto. Smith founded Kidz Magazine in 1995, which was one of the earliest media examples of user-generated content. As its circulation spanned 30 nations, readership soared into the millions. During this period he also served as a co-founder and board member of two nationally ranked charter schools in Colorado: Summit Middle School and Peak-to-Peak K-12. Over the past decade, Smith has served as a co-founder of four enterprises: C Squared (C2), FinaTech, Massively Parallel (MPT), and Fathym. C2 is an angel fund employing a patent-pending financial structure. FinaTech is the developer of IP which provides newfound efficiency in capital formation for private equity funds. MPT is the developer of Blue Cheetah, a solution for the re-use and cloudification of legacy code. Fathym is the developer of a powerful new solution for emergent social media applications and the Internet-of-Things. Scott lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife, Sheri, co-founder of Watershed, an ed-tech company. He has six children and enjoys painting galaxies in his spare time.
