Overview

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1764 Excerpt: ...from any one Observatory, will not be any Discovery: For the Observer at B would find either of these Bodies to appear at D, because the Ray of Refraction directs him thither, tho' all differing in real Altitude: And if the Line B M-be continued to E, so as the L the Star E makes with the Horizon be= L M B H = the L the Moon makes, then the Ray M E will change its Direction without any Cause at M, and run to A and B; but that is impossible. Whence we cannot know the Quantities of Refaction of the Sun and Moon by having that of a Star. One Year's Observations, at most, properly made at the three Places before mentioned, would absolutely determine these Matters, and end all Disputes concerning the Solar System, and ascertain the Planets Magnitudes and Distances. Was the exactQuantity of Refraction truly known in these different Bodies, and at all apparent and real Altitudes, it would be of infinite Use in H 2 Astro Astronomical Calculations. I think the Refraction of the Sun and Moon to be much greater than is allowed by our Astronomers; and I imagine my Opinion may be corroborated in some Measure by this Instance, viz. That the vertical Diameter of the Moon, when near the Horizon, is considerably less than her'Horizontal Diameter is at that Time; which I think cannot possibly be in so small a Space as about 33', if the Horizontal Refraction is no more than that same Quantity. And I find by Hodgson, that in the Year i695, at Pello, in the Latitude of 650 53', that when the Center of the Sun was depress'd 40' below the Horizon, that he was seen, by Means of Refraction, at the Ahitude of two Diameters; which vastly differs from Flamstead's Tables and others. And it is known that the whole Bodies both of the Sun and Moon have been seen for a considerable Time ab...
