Overview

"In the 1970's. a directive was issued by the British Ministry of Defence to employ more women in crucial roles. This is a story of a young woman living in a small English village that through a series of events, finds herself recruited to join a new group tied to British Intelligence. Nicollette Beverley is caught between the safe and secure life of the village or following her yearning to find something bigger in the outside world and within herself. She deals with the emotion and angst as she accepts the recruitment, leaves her village and begins her secret training, separating from the life she knows and entering into the shadowy world of espionage. We follow her journey and experiences form a Cold War prisoner exchange, to an operation in Bulgaria and finally, completing a mission in the Middle East as she grows into her role in British Intelligence. ""Few novels from any era bring us a heroine like Nasty Business's Nicolette Beverly. In this fast-paced story, Andy Goldsmith leads the reader on a rollercoaster ride-time-traveling expertly back to 1970s England and into the Cold War as the British Intelligence begins to train young women, sorely needed, into its espionage program. Following Nicky and her friends through tough training and into their first mission will keep you turning the page in anticipation. Nicollette's transformation from a self-conscious student to a trained spy is fascinating....endearingly, she wants to prove herself to herself, more so than to her superiors and fellow recruits. Setting up a potential spy series, A Nasty Business is a hefty thriller in which a young woman comes of age, growing into a talented spy. Foreword Magazine In Goldsmith's suspense novel, a young woman is recruited to be a spy....Nicollette accepts the position. She weathers an extensive orientation process, training to join an all-female group of spies. Thus she begins a James Bond-esque adventure traveling Europe and learning the job as she goes. She is ultimately pulled into a Cold War plot involving a plan to overthrow the Communist government in Bulgaria. She later works on an assignment in the Middle East in which a few of her friends end up in danger....Nicollette is an intriguing protagonist....A slow spy novel with a capable lead. Kirkus

Author Information

A. R. (Andy) Goldsmith grew up in Maryland and graduated from the University of Maryland. At a young age, he developed an interest in International Affairs and World Geography. He looked forward to the International News section of the Washington Post every Sunday. The son of an ESOL Professor and an amateur poet, he liked to write short stories in multiple genres. Just before retiring from his first career, Andy started to formulate an idea fro his first novel. Combining his interest in International events and Geography, Andy had an idea to introduce a new type of character, a young woman, into the typically men dominated arena of espionage. Nicollette Beverley comes to the forefront as a very young woman recruited into the world of secrets, her training and growth, her emotions and her strength, all leading up to her first mission. Andy lives in Ellicott City, Maryland with his wife, Pauline, his children, their spouses and his grandchildren.
