Overview

Much work has been produced in recent years regarding critical studies of men‘s practices utilizing various feminist and pro-feminist perspectives. This book widens what has hitherto been a dialogue primarily within the Western democracies. The editors have brought together a number of established and new scholars to provide a broader critical analysis of men‘s practices across a wide range of socio-cultural settings. Particular attention is given to the fact that most studies of globalization and transnational social policy have tended not to encompass issues of men‘s practices at all. Issues covered within this volume include: men as carers of children or other adults; men as professional welfare workers; men‘s health, crime and sexual violence; and men‘s practices in organizations. Several contributions explore the complex transnational intersections and interactions occurring in the way men‘s practices are developing across the globe. In addition to this comparative analysis, a wide and carefully selected range of national studies are included from Europe, the Americas, and Asia, as well as Australia and South Africa. A Man‘s World? will be invaluable reading for academics and students of sociology, gender studies, comparative social policy, social and community work, and development studies.

'This collection of articles represents an important turning point in the development of studies of men's practices. It clearly places these studies within a global and a comparative framework, an approach which highlights both diversities and commonalities. A wide number of topics are covered, including violence, fatherhood and health, and the analysis ranges over ten different countries as well as providing a critical assessment of the increasingly global context. Such an approach also allows for a balanced assessment of oppositional practices on the part of different men's groups in several contrasting parts of the world. This is a lively, up-beat and readily accessible collection which should inform both theory and practice in the years to come.' - David H.J. Morgan, Emeritus Professor, Sociology and author of Discovering Men 'A Man's World? is a wonderful collection, full of important information and impressive analysis. This book shows how men create pro-feminist personal movement and political movements, man to man and nation by nation. Essays on politics, welfare, violence, fatherhood and health expand our thinking by placing these issues in global contexts, and essays on the UK, Ireland, Sweden, the US, Brazil, Nicaragua, and Australia explain gendered dimensions of local practices in enlightening new ways. An essential work for the essential project of changing masculinities on a global scale.' - Harry Brod, Editor, The Making of Masculinities: The New Men's Studies, Theorizing Masculinities, A Mensch Among Men: Explorations in Jewish Masculinity 'Research on men, masculinities and globalization addresses matters of central importance for world development.
