Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled A HRCT and immunohistochemistry study on bronchiectasis submitted by Lam Sing Chi For the Degree of Master of Research in Medicine at The University of Hong Kong in May 2004 Purpose: To correlate quantitative HRCT parameters with clinical and collagen IV density in the bronchiectatic airways. Materials and methods: 25 bronchiectatic and 15 control subjects underwent endobronchial biopsies (EBBs) on bronchoscopy. Internal (IBD) and external bronchial diameter (EBD) and accompanying arterial diameter (AD) were measured at selected segmental bronchi, while only IBD and EBD of the thickest bronchus in each lobe was obtained. EBBs were stained with mouse anti-collagen IV antibodies, amplified using LSAB method. Each section was divided into two zones: zone 1 was 0 to 8m below the basement membrane; zone 2 was 9 to 16m below the basement membrane. Collagen IV density and fibril density, saturation and intensity in each zone were obtained using QWIN image analysis package. Correlations between immunohistochemical and HRCT findings were evaluated. Results: Score of bronchial wall thickening correlated with FVC, FEV, FEF and 1 25-75 PEF (r=-0.65, -0.76, -0.55, -0.75; pand PEF (r=-0.49, -0.53, -0.50; ppDOI: 10.5353/th_b3040249 Subjects: BronchiectasisLungs - TomographyImmunohistochemistry
