A History of the Medieval Diocese of Cloyne is written both for the general reader and the specialist. This intriguing historic study first deals with some elements of the early ecclesiastical history of the diocese of Cloyne, then gives an account of the shadowy story of the birth of the 'reformed' diocese of Cloyne, before delving into the history of the diocese down to the time of the Counter-Reformation. Following the traditional method of such diocesan histories, the reign of each succeeding bishop is discussed and placed within its historical context, while a single chapter seeks to deal with the late-medieval monastic life of the diocese. An innovative feature of the present study is a chapter on the establishment of the parish system and deaneries of the diocese. An important element of the book is an appendix where core material for parish history is given under the headings of the 133 medieval parishes found in the diocese. Each entry details place name, earliest record, dedication, physical location, appropriation and impropriation, and finally location within the modern Catholic parish system. The book ends at the start of the seventeenth century. This book should be seen as the second volume in a series of books dealing with the history of the diocese of Cloyne. In 2004 Dr MacCotter published his Colman of Cloyne: A Study, the first volume in the series. In that volume the life and times of the patron saint of the diocese of Cloyne, Colman mac Leinin, was dealth with, along with the cult of Colman and of the history of his primary foundation, the church of Cloyne. MacCotter demonstrated how the mother-church of Cloyne acquired a great paruchia or territory which, in the course of time, became the template for the subsequent diocese of Cloyne.

Author Information

Dr. Paul MacCotter began his career as a genealogist and independent scholar with an especial interest in the lineages originating during the Anglo-Norman period. Obtaining his MA in 1994 (under Kenneth Nicholls) and his Ph.D in 2006 in UCC (under Prof. Donnchadh O Corrain), he extended his research interests to include the secular and ecclesiastical administrative structures of Anglo-Norman Ireland and of High Medieval Gaelic Ireland. He is a part-time lecturer in the School of History, UCC, and lectures in genealogy with Adult Continuing Education in UCC and the Irish Ancestry Research Centre of UL.
