Overview"This work examines the important hymnals that shaped Chinese hymnody and the hymnists who made significant contributions. The hymns written by Chinese authors and composers are discussed in light to their Christian context, poetic forms, imagery, Chinese music styles and musical idiom. This study traces the history of Chinese hymnody from the first Christian hymnal, ""Yang Sin Shen She (Sacred Odes to Nourish the Mind)"" compiled by Robert Morrison in 1818, to the hymnals issued in the first decade of the twenty-first century. Over ninety Chinese hymnals were discussed, each presenting information such as the circumstances of hymnal compilation, sources employed, and notable hymns. Historical and cultural background related to mission work in China and issues about hymnal compilation are explored for the hymnals compiled by missionaries in the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century."
