Overview

The Battle of Chickamauga was the most significant Union defeat in the western theater of the Civil War and the second-deadliest battle of the war behind only Gettysburg. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park was established in 1890, the first of America's national military parks. Immediately after the battle, both Union and Confederate soldiers sought to honor those who gave their lives, and now Chickamauga and Chattanooga are home to more than seven hundred monuments, markers and tablets commemorating those who sacrificed. Author Information

Dr. Stacy Reaves received her PhD from Oklahoma State University and is currently an adjunct professor of history and geography at Tulsa Community College. With a bachelor's degree in historic preservation, she has served as a museum director at Sand Springs Cultural and Historical Museum and curator at Sapulpa Historical Society. James Ogden is a ranger and chief historian for the National Park Service at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Ranger Ogden has taught many courses on the Civil War including a class at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and has appeared on several History Channel and PBS specials.
