Overview

Martha Cole is the oldest of four children. She and her family live on a farm in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Martha loves the peaceful life on the farm. She especially loves flowers. Each spring she plants and cares for her own little flower garden. As Fall approaches in 1930, Martha is looking forward to her last year in junior high and seeing what the decade of the thirties will bring. Little does she know that she and her family will face the greatest challenges they have ever encountered. As the dust bowl era drags on, Martha experiences numerous fears, heartaches, and even love. But how will love fit in with all that she and her family must endure during the period known in the Midwest as the dirty thirties?
