Overview

London, 1938. Petty criminal Danny Beck is released from prison. A handsome and thoroughly unscrupulous young man, Danny will do anything, use anyone, to get what he wants, and no one's going to get the better of him. His charm soon lands Danny a cushy job at a posh country house, where he gets to work trying to seduce his boss's virginal daughter. But Phoebe Merrill isn't the pushover he was expecting. To win her, he must first prove himself but Danny is shocked when she tells him how. Phoebe may have the face of an angel, but he discovers there's a devil inside when she asks him to murder her father. The rewards are too tempting to refuse. With her father dead, Danny will get the girl, her fortune and the easy high life he craves. Perhaps he should ask Phoebe why she wants her father dead, but Danny's never been one to ask too many questions. It's a habit he may live to regret.

An engrossing plot and a lot of atmosphere make it a good read from start to finish. So I can only recommend it.

Author Information

Laura Dowers is a British writer of historical fiction and the author of a new novel The Woman in Room Three. An enthusiastic amateur historian since a teenager, Laura has spent the last twenty years exploring notorious characters from the Tudor era and attempting to rehabilitate their reputations by writing their side of the stories rather than the ones that are so familiar to lovers of this period. She's also written about Ancient Rome and 1930s England. Her last but one novel represents a new direction for her, being a homage to the Sensation fiction writers of the mid-nineteenth-century, such as Wilkie Collins and Mary Elizabeth Braddon.Shakespeare lover, fan of classic British sci-fi shows and an adoring servant of two cats, Laura lives in London.
