Excerpt from A Classified Index to the Transactions, Proceedings and Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society of London: Second Edition, Including All the Memoirs and Notices to the End of 1868 Tax first part of the following Index contains the titles of the Papers and Communications printed in the Publications of the Geological Society, in cluding the Translations and Notices of Geological Memoirs given in the Second or Miscellaneous Part of the Quarterly Journal; these are classed according to Geological systems and groups (chiefly after the table in Lyell's 'manual of and under such other heads as appear to be needful, each division being distinguished by a letter or figure. If the subject-matter of a paper relate to several divisions, the full title is, as a general rule, placed in each division; but where such mention of more than one division merely occurs as an illustration, or in explanation, and does not form an essential part of the paper, the title is not always repeated. When several series or groups are referred to as a System, the title is generally placed under the System, and not repeated; and when all the series or groups of a System are mentioned in the same paper, a similar course is occasionally adopted on this point it was found practically difficult to lay down a rule; and it will therefore be as well, in addition to searching the subdivisions, to examine that of the System also.
