Educated at Alderman Newton's Grammar School, he read English at Wadham College, Oxford. After graduation he trained for the Anglican ministry. On ordination he served in a South London parish while qualifying as a schoolteacher at Goldsmiths' College. For two decades he taught religious education in both state-funded and private schools. In 1982 his son was permanently disabled as result of a road traffic accident, and this caused Phillip to radically re-assess his religious beliefs.
