Upon graduating from the University of Victoria in Environmental Studies, in the late 70's, Derek Wolff was hired with a group of environmentalists to open one of the first energy conservation centers, in Victoria BC. From there, he moved across the pond to Vancouver, where he joined two multi-disciplinary teams at Environment Canada, one involved in the research and drafting of a coastal resource atlas of BC, and the other assessing environmental impacts associated with the proposed Alaska Highway Gas pipeline. A few years later, he made a career change, to hone his writing skills as a free-lance reporter/correspondent for various Vancouver newspapers, magazines and national publications. After that, he rejoined the federal public service working in the areas of public education, media relations and communications. Towards the end of his career, he was awarded a fellowship with the federal government to write a research paper on the Asia-Pacific Gateway Initiative.
