Overview

A Challenging Peace in the Life and Stories of Jesus is for anyone who is curious about the stories of Jesus, yearns for peace in their own lives and in the world today, or appreciates the intersections of art, story, faith, and justice. The book interprets forty stories from the Gospels through block print images created by the author, along with their Biblical texts. It also includes the author's own reflections that draw on the story, the art-making process, and how it all speaks to the challenge of making peace in our times. The author believes there are universal truths in the stories around Jesus that reach beyond the limits of Christianity and may help to unite us all in creating a more peace-filled world.

"""In a brilliant combination of visual creativity and interpretive sensitivity, Cara Hochhalter has crafted an insightful series of meditations rooted in the life and teaching of Jesus. Her intricate and imaginative block prints reveal new aspects of the scriptural passages that we would not realize by attending to words alone. Infused with pathos, exegetical acumen, as well as touches of wit and whimsy, this book challenges us to respond to the loving path of peace woven throughout the gospel."" --Judith H. Newman, Professor of Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism, Emmanuel College of Victoria University, and Department for the Study of Religion, University of Toronto ""Through her block prints and reflections Cara Hochhalter offers new insights to sacred texts. Illuminating stories of justice through her art Hochhalter invites us to engage familiar texts in new ways. The author's questions allow us to arrive at our own realizations of the ways we can make peace. Expanding on work she did as a student at United she brings her art full circle, inviting us to behold the transformative power of these stories from the life of Jesus."" --Cindi Beth Johnson, Professor in the Practice of Theology and the Arts at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities ""Thanks to an imaginative combination of block print art and thoughtful reflection on key New Testament themes, Cara Hochhalter's book is an inspiring reminder of the numerous ingredients and challenges of peacebuilding. It is an important example of the contribution of religious insight to that urgent task."" --David Little, Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and International Affairs, Georgetown University ""The prints that are at the center of this book, and the words that accompany them, surprise us again and again. They seem so simple--until we look anew, and each look reveals greater complexity. The author wants us to understand that peace is like that--the peace that we are summoned to bring about in our world."" --Wayne A. Meeks, Woolsey Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, Yale University"
