Overview

In Malaysia, one of the prime disintegrations of societies' moral values and social structure is greatly attributed to the adopted patriarchal heritage and practices from the forefathers in the behavior of seared conscience male infidelity. Control against women have its long-established position in the histories and ethnographic of the region. Pervasiveness of male dominance perpetrated against women in the patriarchal culture correlate with their adopted practice of male's sexual entitlement outside the institution of marriage in the traditional cultural practice of their forefathers. 9 August 2007, was the day that changed the course of lives for seven families living in a corner of South China Sea. Human race progress is slow in this part of region, just north of equator in a country called Malaysia. A woman living on the western part of Borneo tells her story about her decades long struggle against men in her life living in their closely knitted patriarchal kinship family. Forty years piercing memoirs are explored with unflinching honesty. Eighteen years had passed since she broke free from being trapped in a family she married into. Sixteen years her captor has been in prison, and thirteen years on a death sentence pending execution. Law finally caught up with him as she watches from afar the family that shielded their son from facing criminal justice gave in to the force of the justice system that rendered their son's act cruel and cowardice making him unworthy even in the company of beasts, putting him in a solitary cell twenty-three hours a day. Under a mask, he carefully concealed insanity from society and blood ties, but taken down, he brought turmoil, fears and sufferings to the weaker sex closest to him unbeknownst to any souls outside the family. A game masterminded without comprehension for the others: he brought four accomplices into his game. A serial abuser and a master minder - holding captive two lives, he toyed with their lives as he built his own future with their lives. Not a single soul knew they were in his game. All three went down in history as The Captive Bride; The Serial Abuse Perpetrator; The Wretched Mistress. No one needs to tell him the pain that he caused to his women was equal to murdering their spirit, and ripping their soul. Catherine Chong's story was lost to the world. She died in her own pool of blood in a crime by five individuals instigated by the same man who battered her for years. While their ends may differ, their journeys were about the same. Two wretched women became victims of a serial abuser who lived double lives with these women. Both women, each have their roles with the same man. Both worked, but what was expected from each of these women were played very differently. One raised a family with the abuser, and provided for their children. The other gave up her free will when she played the role of a lover and worker: vulnerably, she obediently delivered results to her master - their abuser. In spirit their fates connected them to the same man. Two people had their lives stolen from them; he kept them both in his shadows. Between two victims of the same abuser: God's wrath upon their abuser gave her a long-awaited break from a standstill of insanity and captivity to her freedom. At Catherine's grave, she thanked her for her role. Catherine's role gave her leeway to breathe, and an avenue for a new beginning in life. In reading her memoirs, there is compelling truth and honesty in between every line, and inspiration to be found. Her story is a story of triumph against all odds, and also a moving tale of unconditional love in a family for a son convicted of his personality. Their profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a meaningful life for herself and her two children on her own terms. She starts her story by talking about the culture that consumed her for a great length of her life.
