After enlisting the help of her sister-in-law in convincing Dotty Keogh's mother to look favourably on Matty as a son-in-law, Emma is back on the PS Mary B for the last trip of the season. The crew is looking forward to the summer break and Emma is happy to be spending the journey with her friend Hilda Zeller. Until they find Hilda's body in the woodpile, and her children alone at their shack. With their father nowhere to be found, taking the children on board is the only option. But as the journey to Echuca continues tempers begin to fray amidst suspicious accidents and falling river levels. Emma quickly discovers that while even the dead have secrets, it's dealing with the secrets of the living that's putting her on edge.
