Overview

The failure of the Serbian leadership to accurately analyze the international geopolitical environment led to a NATO intervention. The war in Kosovo was not avoided, and came as a result of the prolonged crisis created by the Serb and local ethnic Albanian irredentist tendencies. The commenced air strikes minimized the industrial, agricultural, and economic infrastructure of Serbia, and weakened the region environmentally. The whole situation created questions concerning the role of the UN, the human rights interpretation by sovereign states, the future of multinational and multicultural states, and the ability of the European Union to handle crises within and near its geographical borders. A number of problems were highlighted such as the destabilizing trends in Southeast Europe and the need for interventions to reduce or eliminate them. Furthermore, the situation brought about a revision of the necessities and aspirations of the past such as the existence of a coherent European policy on the Balkans.
