Overview

When the British Army was committed to Helmand Province in Afghanistan, the then Secretary of State for Defence John Reid said no shots might ever be fired. Within days of 3 PARA's deployment the reality became very different. Despite a virtual news blackout, reports of heavy fighting began to seep out. Indeed the almost daily firefights with fanatical Taliban insurgency were soon being described as the fiercest fighting since the Second World War. Public interest and concern mounted along with the death toll and reports of numerous serious casualties.
