Overview

Preconditions for Test Anxiety Intervention Program Effectiveness There are a few requirements that must be met before a test anxiety intervention program can be effective. To begin, anxious test-takers should have a set of relevant behavioral skills, such as relaxation, problem-solving, and study/test-taking abilities, that they can use in appropriate evaluative situations. Second, test-restless clients should be adequately inspired to manage evaluative circumstances and have the fortitude and self-viability to effectively execute the adapting abilities they have available to them. Thirdly, in order to guarantee the transfer of therapy from the treatment environment to the real world, test-anxious individuals need to be provided with sufficient practice and experience in the application of various coping strategies in authentic evaluative situations. Test anxiety can be successfully treated in many students through therapy and educational prevention, according to numerous studies. Test-anxiety treatment may target: a) directly reducing anxiety (for example, through relaxation techniques); b) using behavioral therapy techniques like systematic desensitization to break habitual ties between anxiety and situational triggers; c) cognitive therapy to alter the belief structures that underlie test anxiety, such as expectations, self-concepts, and achievement values; and (d) acquiring the skills necessary to learn and work more effectively for success (skills training). The most effective treatments may be those that combine various approaches, according to studies (see 1998, Zeidner).
