Overview

Fervent Patriots maintain iron control over 1777 Danbury Connecticut, but Joe Hamilton, 13, can't decide whom to believe: his pacifist father or his Patriot grandfather. Warned not to mix up in rebel business, sharp-witted Joe mixes into everyone's business while trying to keep his father out of jail. Cannons roar, but the stakes reach deadly levels when locals prove more dangerous that the British invaders. Tar and feathers for Joe's father or the hangman's noose for his grandfather what will follow the flames?

Author Information

Millicent Bell Hughes Hughes converted commuting time into the intricate plot of 1777, which she based on her heritage. Linked to both the Hamilton and Benedict families, Hughes travelled to Connecticut in 2018 to search out family gravestones. Most were illegible, but she located the entire family of another character, parents and grandparent included. At the Connecticut State Library, Hughes found the land deeds and will of Captain Silas Hamilton, signed by Tad Benedict, both characters in her book. Long-ago disaster even led to a rare 1778 document for the purchase of an army substitute. A former equestrian, Hughes lives in Hamilton, Virginia with her partner Charles and their three thoroughbred bicycles.
