Overview

"Did you ever consider that your actions impact everything in this world? That you are responsible for - a co-creator of - the world we live in? Fr. Brian McCormick tells us, ""YOU are the world,"" that all people are One, and what each of us does affects the whole. This is the story of a how a remarkable man became a teacher and practitioner of how to live together as brothers and sisters on this planet of nearly 8 billion people.* Similar to Matthew Desmond in Poverty, by America, he tells us how our greedy lifestyle is a major contributor to the poverty that pervades our society. In his work at the experimental ministry of Martin House in Trenton, NJ, Fr. McCormick was tasked by the Trenton diocese to study and address racism and poverty so that the Church could determine how it could best serve these needs. Fr. McCormick charged forward on this mission, formulating and promoting soul-searching ideas about how society works and how it needs to be changed with regard to the poor. He sees human greed as the basis for poverty and many of society's ills. His ideas about greed and how it stems from a lack of recognition of the Oneness or the inter-relatedness of our world are controversial. He challenges the church to take a leading role in guiding the ""world conscience"" to address society's ills, globally, and right down to the local level - with programs in the nearest center of poverty. Fr. McCormick's ideas on how to make ""Oneness"" a reality, and the journey that formed the man and his ideas, take us on a thought-provoking path in this book. His meditations are sometimes startling but give direct insight into his unique way of thinking and facing the world. You can read more about Fr. McCormick's work in Trenton in the companion book: A Radical Heart: Making Black Lives Matter Through Faith in Action by Mary R. Callahan. *Ideas also put forth by Pope Benedict XVI - World Peace Day 2009, and Pope Francis - Encyclical, Laudato Si, In Care of Our Common Home"

"""You may not agree with everything Fr. Brian says, but his ideas are both thought-provoking and challenging. I have worked with him in Trenton, and he has been single-minded in his vision of helping those trapped in poverty and challenging those financially well off to help those who are not. He has made this his life-long mission."" Robert J Dunne III, Author of 909 Days that Changed the World. Fr. Brian McCormick has been called many things - a rebel, a troublemaker, a saint, a prophet, a visionary. Sister Eleanor Maragliano of the Catholic Commission on Urban Ministry in Newark said: ""Father Fr. Brian is a rarity. The established church is comfortable: they find it easy to collect money, send it and justify themselves that way. Father McCormick is like a John the Baptist crying in the wilderness, and because of that, other pastors don't always take to him. But if he were on an ego trip he'd have been deflated years ago. Look at where he lives [the ghetto] - he doesn't have to be there."" [Trenton] Sunday Times Advertiser March 7, 1976; Priest Strives to Challenge Society - McCormick's mission is not just to make a difference but to challenge society's institutions - including the church - to get serious about social justice as a divine principle. His direct style and outspokenness about the evils of racism and greed can make some people uncomfortable. But it can also nudge them to act. The Times of Trenton, June 8, 1998; The Truth About the Poor - I think a prophet can be defined as someone who tells you what you would rather not hear... If I'm right about that, then Fr. Brian McCormick may qualify as a prophet. He doesn't believe that ... the needs [of the poor] in the country at large can be met within the present order of things. [He says] there are poor people in our cities because the rest of us are greedy. [He says] there are poor people in our cities because the rest of us are greedy. Brian calls one institutional aspect of this greed by a technical name: ""extortionate profit and usury."" By Charles Paolino The News Tribune, July 14, 1992 Woodbridge, NJ;"

Author Information

"Linda Smythe Oliaro has always asked herself, ""What is this world all about, and what is my place?"" She majored in sociology at Montclair State University in NJ and went on to work for VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) before settling into a career in market research. She likes to write to order and clarify things in her mind, and she enjoyed studying and writing about people's reactions to consumer and pharmaceutical products in her career and has spent considerable time formulating and writing grant requests for Fr. Brian McCormick's Martin House charities, for which she has volunteered for many years. Fr. Brian McCormick was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Trenton, NJ in 1966. He was asked to join the experimental ministry of Martin House in Trenton in 1970 and stayed there, living with the underserved, until he retired in 2012. Martin House was formed to address racism and poverty, as well as the Church's role in this. Fr. Brian established many impactful programs to help with housing, education, health/wellness, and self-sufficiency. He has constantly challenged people and the Church to recognize the inter-relatedness of all actions and how each of us is responsible to create a society that does not hurt some (create poverty) while making others rich."
