Hamp Cooley, a distant relative of poet Emily Dickinson, was born in New England, spending her high school years in the South. She graduated from a Midwest college before embarking on a solo backpacking adventure across England, Scotland, and Europe. After returning home, she married and settled in Maryland. Following a government career, Hamp was elected to two terms in local office. In retirement, she led a non-profit focused on housing improvements and dedicated her time to the environment and aging in place. Hamp passionately cared for an historic park on the Severn River and now resides in North Carolina with her husband and two cats.
