Overview

Mary was a young virgin of Jewish origin, from the city of Nazareth in Galilee. She was the daughter of Jehoiachin and Anna, both descendants of King David. According to the Gospel of Luke, the Gospel of Matthew, and the Acts of the Apostles, Mary lived in the late 1st century BC., and until the middle of the 1st century D.C. The Qur'an also affirms this fact (7th century). Meanwhile, Elizabeth was one of the daughters of Aaron, brother of Moses, who delivered the Jews from slavery in Egypt. She was married to Zechariah, a priest of the line of Abijah. Both were very religious and of impeccable conduct; but they had no children because Elizabeth was sterile.
