Overview

In this book, leading musician, jazz club founder, and compere Ronnie Scott recalls the highlights, tribulations, multiple frustrations and moments of intense musical gratification in running his leading London jazz club, due to celebrate its 45th year in October 2004. He also writes of his early days as a musician and band-leader. The book is full of his wry and witty observations and is informed by a shrewd appreciation of the eccentricities of human nature.

Reviews

Reviews of first edition: 'One of the best books about jazz, and its characters, ever written.' Music Week. 'A must for jazz enthusiasts or fans of the Ronnie Scott blend of humour.' Music Week. 'I laughed a lot.' Brian Case, Melody Maker. 'In the train journey sense, it's a Good Read. However, beyond all the anecdote and the wonderful lines... and the hints of Ronnie's East End childhood, there's something deeper. It took Ronnie Scott's account of his early struggles to make me see one of the fundamental differences between jazz musicians and the rest. ' Peter Clayton, Sunday Telegraph. 'With its array of outsize characters and crisp anecdotes the book is genuinely entertaining, even for non-jazz buffs.' Kevin Henriques, FT. 'An enthralling book about a memorable character.' Jim Godbolt, Jazz at Ronnie Scott's.
